Katherine
Cowan, M.D.
is Associate Professor at the UT-Houston Medical School and
also serves as an Attending Physician for General Adult Service
at HCPC.
She received her undergraduate degree from Rice University
in 1978 and her medical degree from the University of Texas
Medical Branch in Galveston in 1982. Cowan completed her postgraduate
training, including a general psychiatry internship and residency
at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio Affiliated
Hospitals, from 1982-86. She is certified by the American
Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Cowan has had an active academic career, serving as assistant
professor of medicine in the Department of Neuro-oncology-Division
of Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center from 1991-93. She
joined the UT-Houston faculty as assistant professor in 1986
and was promoted to the position of associate professor in
the clinical track in 1995.
She is a member of several professional organizations, including
the Texas Medical Foundation, the American Psychiatric Association,
the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians (co-chair of the
membership committee since 1994), Houston Psychiatric Society,
and the Harris County Medical Society.
Additionally, she serves on a number of academic committees
at UT-Houston, including the Medical School Admissions Committee,
a post she has held since 1988 and which requires her to interview
approximately 60 applicants and rank nearly 1,000 applicants
each year.
