Nelson
P. Gruber, M.D.,
Associate Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas-Houston
Medical School, also serves as Attending Physician for the
Older Adult/Geropsychiatry Unit and is involved in basic research
regarding issues related to geriatric psychiatry.
He received his bachelor's degree from The University of Texas
at Austin in 1979 and his medical degree from The University
of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1984. Gruber completed
his internship in pediatrics at the University's Children's
Hospital at Hermann and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson
System Cancer Center. He pursued his residency training in
psychiatry at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston,
including at Hermann Hospital, UT Harris County Psychiatric
Center, UT Mental Sciences Institute and the UT Outpatient
Psychiatry Clinic in 1988. He is board-certified in psychiatry
with a specialization in geriatric psychiatry.
He joined the UT-Houston Medical School in 1989 as an assistant
professor and has served as associate professor since 1996.
He also serves as a faculty affiliate at the Center for Aging
at the UT-Houston Health Science Center.
Gruber is a member of several professional organizations,
including the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric
Association, American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry,
Association for Academic Psychiatry and the Texas Medical
Association.
He has received numerous professional honors, including the
Dean's Teaching Excellence Award presented by the UT-Houston
Medical School (1991-1995) and the Physician's Recognition
Award from the American Medical Association since 1989.
Additionally, Gruber is closely involved with the quality
of medical training for students at UT-Houston Medical School,
serving as a member of the Undergraduate Education Training
Committee and the Departmental Examination and Tutorial Committee
of the Residency Training Committee for the Department of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
