Unit 1C is a 16 bed sub-acute level of care providing care to children and adolescents who have a variety of mental health issues who are under the custody of the Juvenile Probation Department.
Multidisciplinary treatment is provided
by a Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist, Psychiatric Residents, Psychologist,
Therapists, Nurses, Psychiatric Technicians, and Students. The
average length of stay is 30-60 days. Therapy includes substance
abuse groups, coping skills, anger management, music, and recreational
therapy.
School is provided during the regular school year by two HISD school district teachers. Care is coordinated by the hospital treatment team, the attending psychiatrist, and the juvenile probation department psychologist and officers through a weekly teleconference to review the child's progress and family work.
The goal is to return as many children and adolescents to their home and parents when possible. Individual therapy and psychological testing is provided as needed. Daily group therapy, medication evaluation, and positive reinforcement are part of the treatment process.
Family involvement through visitation, communication, and participation in scheduled family meetings is a critical element of the program in order to facilitate the return to home environment.
