What is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?
The University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program is an intensive program designed to help individuals reduce their symptoms while they continue to live in the community. It provides a safe, supportive community environment for those with mental illness who need professional help to stabilize their mental or emotional problems. Individual treatment programs are designed and provided by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists and counselors. The program empowers patients to take responsibility for their mental health well-being.

Who might benefit from Intensive Outpatient Treatment?
Persons in treatment who in the view of their physicians are ready to leave the hospital but who need more help than traditional outpatient treatment provides

  • Persons who would benefit from monitoring during their adjustment to medications
  • Persons who no longer need full hospitalization but need additional intensive professional help before they can progress further in outpatient treatment
  • Persons who need to gain increased stabilization of their mental illness
  • Persons who need help to maintain independence and responsibility for their lives

What is the Intensive Outpatient Program Like?
Patients scheduled treatment, depending upon severity of their illness, generally three to four times a week. Program options include individual and group therapy, medication management, nursing education about daily living and leisure skills. Family therapy or additional patient therapy and education are also offered.

What is the Cost of Outpatient Treatment?
Most Insurance carriers provide coverage for our behavioral health services. Fees are dependent upon the services provided. University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Center Outpatient program accepts most major insurance as well as self-pay, Medicare, Managed Medicaid, PPO and CHIP.
